Designed to appeal to families who need to transport passengers and cargo on a regular basis as well as occasionally need off road or towing capabilities, the Highlander satisfied the daily desire for a smooth and comfortable ride, a flexible cargo area and capable off road functionality.

The 2001 Highlander was available in four different configurations derived from a base model equipped with either front wheel drive or all wheel drive, and the choice of a fuel efficient 2.4 liter 4 cylinder or a more powerful 3.0 liter V6 engine. The ground clearance is relatively low, making getting in and out and loading and unloading much easier. Even so, this modest ground clearance did not hinder the Highlander’s off road performance.
