The FJ Cruiser by Toyota is a 4-door SUV
13th July 2009
Catering to the young outdoor crowd, the FJ Cruiser comes with a hefty 4.0 liter V6 which pumps out 239 hp @ 5200 rpm and 278 lb.-ft. @ 3700 rpm. The drivetrain consists of a 5-speed automatic and rear-wheel 2WD or part-time 4WD. The full-time 4WD comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser is the design reincarnation of the original Land Cruiser. Ground clearance is impressive at 9.6 inches for the 4WD, and 8.7 in. for the 2WD. With skid plates on the engine, gas tank, and transfer case, the FJ Cruiser is nicely outfitted to go right to your favorite rock hopping venue.
The solid off-road engineering of the 2007 FJ Cruiser is continued in the all-business interior, with stylish but functional instrumentation, four hand grips, and water-resistant seats. With accessories like a front skid plate and rock rails, there will be no mistaking the Cruiser for a Jeep mail truck. Other aftermarket add-ons we like are the Garmin Navigation System and the TRD Performance Exhaust. Let’s roll.
Let’s talk a little about the safety features on the 2007 FJ Cruiser. With the powerful V6 in action, you will eventually need to stop, and stop you will with ABS, brake assist, and stability control in full effect. Driver and front passenger airbags are standard, as is the child restraint system, and side-impact door beams. FJ has the off-road cred, but it also has good road manners and comfort.
A quiet drive, even at highway speeds is partially erased by the poor visibility and sub-par fuel economy, 17 mpg city, 21 highway for the 4WD automatic. The 2007 FJ Cruiser is a promising addition to the Toyota stable which already houses a group of fine off-road stallions.
The back seat splits and fold on the conventional 60/40 arrangement. When it’s down you pick up about 66 cu. ft. of storage space and the floor is covered in rubber making clean-ups a breeze. All the locks, including the one for the tailgate, are powered as are the windows. (The back window is a flip-up hatch as well.)
Drivers who opt for the Off-Road Package on the 2008 FJ Cruiser will pick up a system for active traction control, rear differential lock on models with the five-speed automatic transmission, and Bilstein shock absorbers front and rear. The P265/75R16 BF Goodrich tires are perfect for mud and snow and look tough on the 16″ alloy wheels. Add privacy glass, cruise control, a sensor for backing up, a rack on the roof, powered mirrors, and a metallic shift knob and you’re not just off-road, you’re off-road with style. (Added instrumentation with this package includes outside temp, inclinometer, and compass.)
Vehicle is more than adequate for its size, though immediate acceleration can be slower than expected. The stability and handling of the FJ Cruiser are high above average as it effortlessly conquers a variety of off and on road conditions. On the road, this rugged and functional compact SUV provides a relatively smooth ride as it surrounds the driver and passengers with high quality materials that are visible throughout the simple yet highly functional interior-highlighted with metallic touches in all the right places.
The Toyota FJ Cruiser is a compact SUV that is especially appealing to off road enthusiasts who spend a lot of time driving in sport utility mode. Toyota now has two SUV models in each of the three size categories-compact, mid and full size SUV-with each model either more applicable for off road driving or more applicable for every day comfort and moderate utility needs. The Toyota FJ Cruiser is the off road champ when compared with Toyota’s other very capable compact SUV, the RAV4, which boasts more beauty (and comfort) and less brawn to tackle the rough terrain as well as the slightly less comfortable FJ Cruiser.
The instantly apparent retro style of the FJ Cruiser was derived from and presented, in part, in memory of, the 1960’s Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser. Before the creation of the corporate Toyota emblem that most are familiar with seeing on Toyota vehicles today, the 1960’s FJ40 Land Cruiser’s bore the letters spelling out the name of its manufacturer-TOYOTA- on the front grille. Reminiscent of that day and time, the grille of the FJ Cruiser proudly displays the Toyota name on a Land Cruiser inspired front bumper and hopes to make just as good an impression as its apparent idol the Land Cruiser, which is still produced and manufactured as of 2007-more than 50 years since it was first introduced in America. The distinctive wrap around rear windows and low overhang are also clearly inspired by the decades former Land Cruiser.
Tundra can’t really lay claim to better than average in terms of safety. Front crash tests for the Regular Cab versions won five stars, but everything else was four-star. IIHS ratings included two As, which is acceptable, while everything else was G, which is the best score. Safety features include child safety locks on the four-doors, anti-theft system, locking tailgate, limited slip differential, airbags everywhere and antilock brakes with traction control, electronic braking assistance and vehicle stability control system.
The base price for the 2009 Toyota Tundra is $22,490, which is well below the class average. No doubt, Tundra is a nice pickup, and certainly one of the best looking on the road. Still, overall it doesn’t seem to quite measure up to the same high standards as the Tacoma, Toyota’s small pickup.
Competition includes the Dodge Ram 1500, Ford F-150, GMC Sierra 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Nissan Titan. The Tundra has not changed looks since 2007, but new for this year are a couple of performance packages and Flex Fuel capability.
The Tundra comes in three cab sizes. Regular is the normal two-door pickup. Double Cab is the small rear doors (which is different from the Double Cab on the Tacoma). CrewMax is the full four-door version, especially nice as it has front hinges on the rear door and it opens a full 80 degrees. Tundra also comes in three bed sizes and either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive.
Tundra comes with three available engines. First is the same 4.0 liter, 236 horsepower V6 found in the larger Tacomas. The standard engine, however, if there is one, is the 4.7 liter, 276 horsepower V8. There is also the larger 5.7 liter, 381 horsepower V8. All are gasoline powered.
Both the smaller engines are a little underpowered, but the 5.7 liter is ahead of class in both horsepower and power to weight ratio. The larger engine gets a six-speed automatic transmission, while the two smaller versions get a five-speed automatic, both with overdrive. Manual transmission is not available.
Actually, the other engines and four-wheel drive are all the same or very near the same figures.
Maximum towing is 10,800 pounds, which is about average for class. Maximum payload is 1990, which is a little light for class.

The larger engine gets a six-speed automatic transmission, while the two smaller versions get a five-speed automatic, both with overdrive. Manual transmission is not available.
Regular cab and some versions of the Access cab come with the 2.7 liter, 157 horsepower gasoline powered I4 engine, which can be matched with either a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The rest of the Access cabs and all of the Double cabs come with the 4.0 liter, 236 horsepower gasoline powered V6 engine with either a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission with overdrive.
Maximum towing weight for the Tacoma is 6500 pounds. Maximum payload is 1570 pounds. The payload is excellent for class, while the towing weight is fair. The four-cylinder engine is somewhat underpowered, making the power to weight ratio a little weak, especially on the Access cab models. Front legroom is also a little tight.
The Tacoma is very safe for a small pickup. NHTSA ratings are five-star everywhere except rollover, which is either three- or four-star, depending on the cab style. The lower rollover rating for a small pickup is not uncommon. IIHS gives G’s straight across.
Safety features include child safety locks on the Double cabs, an anti-theft system, antilock brakes with electronic braking assistance, traction control and vehicle stability control, limited slip/locking differential, electronic parking aid and seat belts everywhere. It does not have a locking tailgate.
The base price for the 2009 Toyota Tacoma is a mere $15,170. That’s almost $10,000 below class average. The fact is, as the sales numbers attest, if you want a small pickup and willing to give up the room, horsepower and hauling capacity of the bigger trucks, the Tacoma is hard to beat. If, for instance, you want an inexpensive vehicle to drive to work and do some light hauling now and then - and it seems a lot of us want just that.
